The Linguistic Evolution of Internet Communication: Trends and Implications

Luka Petrovic , Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade, Serbia

Abstract

The rapid evolution of internet communication has profoundly influenced linguistic practices, giving rise to new forms of discourse that blend traditional language use with digital innovations. This article investigates the linguistic aspects of modern internet communication, focusing on the emergence of new vocabulary, grammar, and stylistic features. Using a mixed-methods approach, we analyze data from social media platforms, messaging apps, and online forums to identify key trends and their implications for language evolution. The findings reveal that internet communication fosters linguistic creativity, informalization, and globalization, while also raising concerns about language standardization and preservation. This study contributes to the growing body of research on digital linguistics and provides insights into the transformative impact of the internet on language.
