Abstract

Linguistics is a scientific discipline devoted to the study of human language in all its manifestations, with particular attention to its structure, development, and communicative functions. This paper offers a comprehensive overview of the principal branches of linguistics, including phonetics, phonology, lexicology, and grammar (morphology and syntax), as well as semantics and pragmatics. It also considers more specialized areas such as cognitive linguistics, paralinguistics, and psycholinguistics. In addition, the article traces the historical evolution of linguistic thought, examining the rise of major linguistic schools and the growth of applied linguistics throughout the 20th century, largely shaped by technological progress. Finally, it explores several subfields-such as comparative linguistics, linguistic typology, and dialectology-that enable the study of languages from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives. Overall, the analysis underscores the essential role of linguistics in deepening our understanding of language and human communication across different periods and contexts.
