This study examines the role of online games in enhancing vocabulary acquisition among learners of English as a Second Language (ESL) in modern digital learning environments. As educational technologies continue to develop, game-based learning has become an interactive and learner-centered approach that supports vocabulary development and language engagement.
Using a qualitative literature-based method, the study explores how different forms of online games, including vocabulary games, role-playing activities, and quiz-based platforms, contribute to lexical retention, contextual language use, and communicative development. Particular attention is given to motivational and cognitive factors such as repetition, immediate feedback, and active learner participation. The findings indicate that online games create engaging and meaningful learning environments that improve vocabulary acquisition, increase learner motivation, and support communication skills. However, challenges related to technological access and instructional implementation remain important considerations. The study concludes that properly integrated online games can serve as an effective tool for vocabulary instruction in language education.
