ADVANCING SMALL-SCALE IRRIGATION WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY: A CASE STUDY OF SELNICA PODRAVSKA, CROATIA

Horvat Petrović , University of Zagreb, Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering, Varazdin, Croatia

Abstract

This study explores the application of renewable energy in advancing small-scale agricultural irrigation systems, focusing on a case study from Selnica Podravska, Croatia. In response to challenges such as water scarcity and reliance on fossil fuels for irrigation, the research investigates the feasibility, benefits, and impact of integrating renewable energy solutions, specifically solar and wind power, into local irrigation practices. The case study evaluates the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of adopting renewable energy, including the reduction in energy costs, sustainability of water resources, and the potential for increased agricultural productivity. Data from field trials, cost-benefit analysis, and stakeholder interviews provide insights into the practical implementation of these energy systems in rural settings. The findings suggest that renewable energy offers a viable and sustainable solution for small-scale irrigation, enhancing both environmental and economic outcomes for farmers in Selnica Podravska and similar regions.
