
The Development of The Detective Genre in English Literature and The Role of Arthur Conan Doyle
Abstract
This article examines the evolution of the detective genre in English literature, emphasizing Arthur Conan Doyle’s transformative contributions through his creation of Sherlock Holmes. By investigating key historical developments and analyzing Doyle's works, the article provides insights into how the genre matured and became embedded in English literature. Drawing on the work of literary critics and prior research, this article discusses the foundational themes, structural components, and character archetypes that Doyle helped establish, which have influenced generations of detective fiction writers.
