Polypredicativity predicative centre finiteness

The article examines the relationship between finiteness, predicative centres, and syntactic dependency in English and Uzbek polypredicative constructions. The study is based on theoretical sources and a comparative analysis of functionally matched examples constructed for analytical purposes. Subject reference, the scope of negation, and the external syntactic function of units are examined in constructions involving auxiliary predicates, infinitives, content complements, temporal clauses, conditional clauses, and relative constructions. The findings show that a finite form is not equivalent to communicative independence, while some non-finite units preserve internal predication. The article therefore argues that relations between situations and their grammatical expression should be described separately. The proposed criteria may be applied in translation analysis and corpus annotation. The conclusions are limited to qualitative analysis and do not establish the frequency of the constructions in actual language use.
