Russian classical dramaturgy poetic world of A.P. Chekhov character speech behavior

The study presents an exhaustive philological inquiry into the existential, ethical, and communicative problem of life choice in the dramatic oeuvre of A.P. Chekhov. The empirical foundation encompasses the four major plays, namely The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard. The author investigates the phenomenon of life choice not merely as an overt plot mechanism, but primarily through the underlying linguistic and textual matrix of the dramatic works, semantic leitmotif structures, compositional design, speech behavior, and the pragmatic functions of pauses and subtext. The paper demonstrates that the apparent stagnation of stage action, as well as the phenomenon of delayed, unfulfilled, or abandoned deeds, constitutes a deliberate manifestation of internal choice conditioned by an axiological shift at the turn of the twentieth century. Through the lens of discourse analysis, speech repetitions, implicit psychological motivations, and auto-communication, the study delineates the dialectic between personal autonomy, moral duty, and ethical responsibility. The findings advance the understanding of Chekhovian dramaturgy, illustrating how dramatic tension migrates from external confrontation to deep communicative and ontological planes.
