This article analyses the theoretical and methodological foundations of interlingua-based machine translation and its functional capabilities in the automatic translation process. Within this approach, the mechanisms of transforming the lexical, syntactic, and semantic features of the source text into a language-independent abstract representation and generating the target-language translation text on the basis of this conceptual model are examined. The significance of lexical-conceptual structure, knowledge-based translation, semantic representation, and automatic text generation in improving translation quality is also substantiated. The capabilities of the interlingua approach to neutralize structural and grammatical differences between different languages and to produce semantically adequate translations are revealed.
