The article examines the functioning of paraphonetic means of portrayal. As has already been noted, paraphonetic means include all sound phenomena that are actualised during the communicative act, namely: properly phonetic and prosodic phenomena, such as repetition, hesitation markers, abrupt articulation, etc., temporal phenomena in the form of delay, deceleration, pausation, silence and the like. The present study has been carried out in accordance with the methodological principles of linguoculturology, phonostylistics and discourse analysis on the material of the novel The Man of Property by the English writer J. Galsworthy. The analysis of the literary text from the standpoint of phonostylistics has shown that the sound organisation of the novel, or rather the system of its markers, is closely connected with the ideology of the epoch and constitutes, in our opinion, an inalienable part of the representation of bourgeois heroism.
