This article examines the evolution of the major methodological approaches to teaching RFL in the context of developing linguistic competence. A historical-theoretical analysis of the grammar-translation, audiolingual, audiovisual, communicative, and competency-based approaches identifies their key features, strengths, and limitations. The findings indicate that the competency-based approach integrates linguistic knowledge, communicative skills, and their practical application in academic, professional, and intercultural communication, providing a foundation for the further advancement of RFL methodology.
