This article examines the functional-pragmatic characteristics of promise speech acts in English and Uzbek detective film discourse. Within the framework of speech act theory, promise acts are analyzed as a subtype of commissive speech acts expressing the speaker’s commitment to a future course of action. The study comparatively investigates explicit and implicit promise speech acts in English and Uzbek detective films based on the materials of “Sherlock Holmes” and the Uzbek detective series “Shaytanat”. Particular attention is paid to the illocutionary force, communicative intention, contextual realization, and pragmatic influence of promise acts in detective discourse. The research also highlights the linguocultural features of promise speech acts and their role in shaping interpersonal relations between characters. The findings demonstrate that promise speech acts function not only as communicative tools but also as important pragmatic mechanisms contributing to dramatic development and discourse organization in detective films.
