There are more than 200,000 surgeries for anterior abdominal wall hernias are performed in Russian Federation annually, of which 50,000 are for postoperative ventral hernias (POVH), indicating the socio-economic significance of this problem. Literature data concerning the current understanding of the pathogenesis of hernias have been studied and summarized based on the investigation of wound healing processes have been reviewed and summarized. The literature review included 24 sources. The resources of the search engines PubMed, Cochrane Library, UpToDate, and eLIBRARY, as well as websites of reputable scientific journals and dissertations on the research topic, were used. The following filters were applied: publication year no later than 1999 and publication language (Russian, English). The article discusses the pathogenesis of hernia formation in the anterior abdominal wall based on studies of the histological characteristics of tissues and highlights the most reliable markers of hernia disease. . Further research is necessary to validate the main histological markers of hernia disease that allow for the assessment of risks associated with the formation of postoperative ventral hernias, which will subsequently enable the development of preventive measures to hinder their progression.
